Demand Side Management INTRODUCTION Energy is a vital input to development and elementary studies have shown a direct relationship between the national GDP and the total Energy Consumption. This implies that depletion of energy resources would result in economic stagnation for any country. Demand Side Management is a systematic evaluation of energy utilization by matching the available energy to the desired production for use in industrial and public buildings with a view to identifying existing energy conservation opportunities. The Demand Side Management Program being undertaken by ZESCO is an initiative of the Ministry of Energy and Water Development and the World Bank ESMAP programme in collaboration with ZESCO Limited. IMPLEMENTATION The Program was implemented in 1994 with the creation of a special department at ZESCO. The principal activities of the department are: 1 Collection of customers’ end-use data and analysis of energy conservation opportunities through energy audits. 2 To promote energy conservation opportunities and the utilization of energy efficient equipment. Formulation of a Demand Side Management strategy and other energy efficiency activities. BENEFITS TO CUSTOMERS Customers are made aware of the existing energy saving opportunities in their companies or industries. Customers are brought in contact with manufacturers of energy saving equipment. Customers’ bills are reduced after implementing identified energy conservation opportunities in their plants, companies or industries. Customers are able to expand their businesses, buildings, and production lines without Requiring further system reinforcement from ZESCO, which they would otherwise pay for
