Generation Projects

ZESCO’s electricity generation is 99 percent hydro, and one percent thermal from diesel powered generators located in most districts of North Western Province. The total installed capacity stands at 2,337 Mega Watts (MW)

LUNZUA POWER STATION

Projects

120MW Itezhi-Tezhi Hydro Power Project.

ItezhiTezhi, the 120MW hydropower project worth USD245 Million, is scheduled for completion by 31st October 2015. The project is owned jointly by ZESCO and Tata of India. ZESCO owns50% and similarly Tata owns 50%. The project value is estimated at US$217 million.

Kariba North Bank Extension.

Located in Siavonga on the Zambezi River next to the existing Kariba North Bank Power Station is another 360 MW Power Station. A provision for the extension of the existing one was made during the planning and construction of the Kariba North Bank Power Station.

Shiwangandu Mini-Hydro Power Station Project.

The Zambian Government has embarked on some Renewable Energy Based Electricity Generation for Mini-Grids in Zambia. Shiwang’andu Mini Hydropower Project in Chinsali District is one such Project that identified and is being co-financed by ZESCO Ltd (93%) and the Global Environmental Facility GEF (7%). The Project is being coordinated by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

Kariba North Bank Extension.

Located in Siavonga on the Zambezi River next to the existing Kariba North Bank Power Station is another 360 MW Power Station. A provision for the extension of the existing one was made during the planning and construction of the Kariba North Bank Power Station. Kariba North Bank Extension (KNBE) Power Station was then developed by a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) called Kariba North Bank Extension Power Corporation Limited (wholly owned by ZESCO) at an estimated cost of US$ 420 Million.
