The 360MW power generation is wholly owned by ZESCO. In 2003, the Government of the republic of Zambia entered into a bilateral agreement with the People’s Republic of China for construction of power generating stations to mitigate the power deficit the country was faced with. This culminated into the signing of an MoU between ZESCO Limited and Sinohydro of China for the construction of an additional 360MW generating capacity at Kariba North Bank Power Station in Siavonga. The development of the projected resulted in the incorporation of KNBEPC Limited as a special purpose vehicle to run and operate the 360MW extension to the existing Kariba North Bank Power Station. The construction of the Power Station was financed by China Exim Bank and Development Bank of South Africa (DBSA). The China Exim loan was contracted by ZESCO Limited and on-lent to KNBEPC.
