SOLAR SURGE: CHIPATA WEST 100MW PROJECT BREAKS GROUND!

Zambia's ambitious 1,000MW solar power target is gaining momentum, with the Chipata West 100MW Solar PV project breaking ground in Eastern Province.

Located in Chief Chinyaku's Chiefdom, this project will contribute to the national energy security and self-sufficiency.

"The Chipata West 100MW solar project is a step towards achieving national energy security and self-sufficiency," says Eng. Peter Chamfya, ZESCO Chief Operating Officer at the groundbreaking ceremony held in Musekela, Chipata West on Saturday, August 16 2025. "We're diversifying Zambia's energy mix, reducing reliance on hydropower, and promoting sustainable development."

Meanwhile, Government says the unveiling of the Chipata West 100MW solar project is a testament to President Hichilema’s vision for a fully electrified Zambia, where solar electricity contributes significantly.

“The government’s Solar Explosion initiative is aimed at not only increasing the energy available to homes, businesses and industries but also ensuring access to clean energy, reducing our carbon footprint and promoting sustainable development,” says Dr. Lewis Mwape, Eastern Province, Deputy Permanent Secretary.

The Provincial Deputy Permanent Secretary further disclosed that government has taken aggressively forward-looking policy decisions over the past year—from approving and operationalizing accelerated regulations to removing duties on imported solar equipment.

And His Royal Highness Chief Chinyaku has commended President Hichilema for walking the talk by taking development to all parts of the country.

“I am excited that this development has been extended to our chiefdom not just in town. This development is a fulfilment of what he promised us. I am urging him not to stop here but to continue with the work he has started.”

The Chipata West 100MW Solar Project to be delivered in 12 months is expected to provide locally generated clean energy within this part of the national grid, serving the rural communities in Eastern Province and create employment, skills transfer, boost commercial activities and trade in the area and contribute to environmental sustainability through carbon emissions reduction.
