Zambia Powers Up: Mansa 50MW Solar Project in the Home Stretch
Zambia's push for more reliable power is getting a major boost. The Mansa 50MW solar project is racing towards the finish line, bringing the country one step closer to easing its current electricity shortages.
Located in Chief Mabumba’s Chiefdom in Mansa, Luapula Province, this is a key piece of Zambia's ambitious plan to generate 1,000MW of solar energy.
The excitement is building, and rightly so! The ZESCO Board Chairman, Mr. Vickson Ncube, Board Member Eng. Christopher Mubemba, and the Director of Corporate Support Services, Ms. Chama Nsabika, on Friday, 7 November 2025, conducted a media tour of the project, which is now 75% complete and on course for December 2025 commissioning.
“In the integrated resource plan, the government has targeted Zambia achieving energy sufficiency reliability and surplus. And this is going to be achieved through projects such as the ZESCO-owned Mansa 50MW solar project,” says Mr. Ncube. “Once this project is completed, Mansa and all the surrounding areas will say bye to loadshedding. And our completion target is this December.”
Republican President Hakainde Hichilema is at the forefront of leading Zambia’s ambitions to achieve 1,000MW of solar-generated electricity. And the utility Board Chairperson says the country is on course to realising the Presidential target.
“I know it has taken us time to pick up the pace. It takes time for people to understand the change taking place in the world. First, you must do change management, get buy-in from all stakeholders so that we move at the same time,” says Mr. Ncube.
“Since this is a long-term solution, we had to do a lot of stakeholder engagement to get buy-in from every stakeholder, and now every Zambian has bought into the solar theme.”
The Mansa 50MW project is tangible evidence that ZESCO is making serious progress in its mission to diversify Zambia's energy mix, proving its commitment to building a cleaner, more resilient power grid for the future in the shortest time possible.
Earlier in the day, the Board Chairperson, Board Member, and Corporate Executive Team paid a courtesy call on His Royal Highness Chief Mabumba.
